Structure of the dielectric tensor in nematic liquid crystals with topological charge.
A q-plate is a stratified medium composed of a uniaxial nematic liquid crystal with an inhomogeneous orientation of the optical axis possessing a topological charge q, which looks promising as a switching device. This work reports an approach to diagonalizing the dielectric tensor in q-plates, giving a detailed study of nontrivial tensor coordinate transformations. The relationship between the ...
متن کاملHomeotropic alignment of nematic liquid crystals with negative dielectric anisotropy
We report here uniform and defect-free homeotropic alignment of nematic liquid crystal having negative dielectric anisotropy (Deo0) on cleaned substrates, which can be changed to bright state (homogeneous alignment) by applying an electric field. However, non-uniformity in the bright state would not be desirable for display devices. Therefore, silane treated and gently rubbed substrates have be...

We show that backflow, the coupling between the order parameter and the velocity fields, has a significant effect on the motion of defects in nematic liquid crystals. In particular, the defect speed can depend strongly on the topological strength in two dimensions and on the sense of rotation of the director about the core in three dimensions.
متن کاملSimulation and visualization of topological defects in nematic liquid crystals.
We present a method of visualizing topological defects arising in numerical simulations of liquid crystals. The method is based on scientific visualization techniques developed to visualize second-rank tensor fields, yielding information not only on the local structure of the field but also on the continuity of these structures. We show how these techniques can be used to first locate topologic...
